The objectives of these courses included the analysis of the global capitalist system and daily life; the exploration of Cultural Studies methods and categories; and the development of English reading and translation skills to provide graduate students with concrete resources for actively participation in the international academic world.

Speaker: Pan Jia’en (Chongqing University)
About the speaker: Pan Jia’en holds a PhD in Cultural Studies. He is a lecturer and advisor for MA students at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences at Chongqing University; Visiting Fellow at the China Rural Reconstruction College, Southwest University; Researcher at the Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies of China (CCCS) at Shanghai University.
Since 2001, Pan Jia’en has been participating in the contemporary Chinese rural reconstruction movement. He is one of the founders of the James Yen Rural Reconstruction Institute, a board member for the Green Ground Eco-Tech Centre (Beijing), and coordinates the Chongqing regional activities of the Renmin University of China’s Rural Reconstruction Center. He has published over 20 academic articles in Chinese and English in journals such as Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, China Journal of Social Work, Taiwan:  A Radical Quarterly in Social Studies 《台湾社会研究季刊》, The Twenty-First Century 《二十一世纪》, Open Times 《开放时代》, and Frontiers 《天涯》.

Professors and students in the department participate in the 5th National Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and Organic Agriculture Experience Exchange held at Tongji University
This conference highlighted crossing boundaries, expansion, and innovation; new tasks and challenges in the development of CSA and the changing circumstances of present society’s development; and a thorough investigation of China’s “Three Rural Issues” from the perspectives of technology, culture, design innovation, platform construction, and new kinds of financing.

Speaker: Wen Tiejun (Renmin University of China)
About the speaker: Professor Wen Tiejun is Executive Dean, Institute of Advanced Studies for Sustainability, Renmin University of China; Executive Dean, Institute of Rural Reconstruction of China, Southwest University; State Council Expert for Special Allowance and “Three Rural Issues” Expert.
Since 2004, he has been appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Renmin University of China; Director of the Rural Reconstruction Center of Renmin University; Director of the Rural Economic and Financial Research Institute and Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of Renmin University of China; Chairman of the Degree Committee’s Subcommittee on Industry and Commerce Management and Agriculture and Forestry Economic Management.
Since 2005, he has been appointed as a member of the National Environment Advisory Committee; Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment Expert for the Ministry of Environmental Protection; special expert for ministries and commissions such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the State Forestry Administration, and the Ministry of Health. In 2007, he was elected Vice President of the Chinese Association of Agricultural Economics. In 2008, the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council appointed him a member of the Sixth Academic Discipline Review Group on Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management.
Main research areas: International – comparative research on the development of developing countries. Domestic – national conditions and growth; institutional change; rural governance and rural reconstruction; rural finance and taxation system reform.

Lecture: “Cultural Studies Education in Hong Kong: The Story of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs and Middle Schools”
Speaker: Xu Baoqiang (Lingnan University, Hong Kong)
About the speaker: Currently residing in Hong Kong, Xu Baoqiang compiled the translated series Culture and Society Studies and the book series Hong Kong Cultural Studies. He is Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, and the director of courses for graduate diplomas in general education studies. His research interests include cultural economy, education and cultural studies, community economy, development studies, and the history of capitalism and the market.
Professor Xu’s publications include What Capitalism is Not 《资本主义不是什么》 (Hong Kong: Oxford University Press, 2002); Poverty in Wealth: Commentary on Hong Kong’s Cultural Economy 《富裕中的贫乏--香港文化经济评论》(Hong Kong: Step Forward Multimedia, 2003); a compilation of six books in the translated series Society/Culture (Hong Kong: Oxford University Press; Beijing: Central Compilation and Translation Press); academic articles published in journals such as Taiwan: A Radical Quarterly in Social Studies 《台湾社会研究季刊》, Cultural Studies Review, and Inter-Asia Cultural Studies.
